You may have noticed that the taste and health benefits of bone broth just aren’t the same when you buy it from the store. During the last few months, while we’ve been in quarantine, my oldest daughter has discovered a love for cooking. Some of my favorite moments have been helping her transition from baking sweet treats to make delicious yet healthy food that she is proud to claim as her own creation. One of our, ok my, favorite recipes to make together is our Whole Chicken recipe, and it’s become a weekly staple at our house. It fits all of my needs: a super easy and healthy meal that tastes great and is the perfect base for other delicious recipes in the days after we make it, which means less clean-up overall. The best part is that we use the scrapes, and the same pot, to make bone broth from scratch, and it’s actually much easier and much more delicious than you might think!Bone broth seems archaic to some as it is made from the bones and connective tissue of a whole chicken, so nothing goes to waste, but if you agree with this thinking, then just picture how amazing your caveman physique was, and read on. There are quite a few health benefits of bone broth that will improve your overall health, including helping to maintain a healthy gut, repair digestive issues, reduce inflammation, provide nutrients and minerals for muscle and skin recovery, and help protect and heal your joints.[1] It also includes important nutrients and minerals. If you’re looking for ways to support your digestive health, chicken bone broth should be one of your go-to's. The way I make it tastes great hot or cold, and you can add or substitute any of your favorite herbs, spices, vinegar, and vegetables for added flavor and nutrients. Today I’m sharing some of my favorite health benefits of bone broth and my perfected recipe. Additionally, read on for access to my free Gut Health Staples recipe ebook, enjoy!
Let’s break down the basic nutrients. Glutamine, glycine, and other amino acids are present in bone broth, and research has shown they help make the digestion process much easier on your gut. The broth also contains collagen and other muciligenics, which can also aid in helping to place a protective layer to the intestines, like a layer of Neosporin to a cut, and to speed leaky gut repair. Bone broth will help to soothe and heal your lower stomach as well, which has additional digestive benefits. Drinking bone broth will also provide you with much-needed amino acids to help relieve excess inflammation in your digestive tract, as well as form new healthy intestinal cells. [2]
As we age, the cartilage in our joints will wear down and shrink down, which can also add additional stress to the joints and cause pain. If this progresses, the joints may become damaged with continued overuse and pressure if we don’t do anything about it. Bone Broth has high sources of gelatin, glucosamine, calcium, magnesium hyaluronic acid, and other vital nutrients and minerals that will naturally help to nourish and strengthen your bones and joints so adding it regularly, with a healthy lifestyle, will help you be able to to do all your favorite physical activities for years to come no matter your age!
The amino acids found in bone broth have been shown to help promote better sleep, including glycine, and is considered a safe, therapeutic option to help aid in sleep. When taken before sleep, bone broth could help you get a good night’s rest and feel less fatigued the next day...and it WAY healthier than a warm glass of milk! By drinking bone broth daily, it may provide enough glycine to have the same effect as a supplement.I’ve found that when it’s combined or paired with other sleep-supportive nutrients like calcium and magnesium, it can be even more effective and provide a better night’s sleep to those who need the help.
If you’re anything like me, you would love soft and smooth skin that makes you look more youthful than your age. Luckily bone broth helps here too; it has a high source of collagen that can help to naturally keep your skin feeling at it’s best. Collagen is also known to help renew and repair skin cells. Because collagen molecules are large and difficult to absorb through your skin, (sorry to say most of those creams with collagen may not be as effective as you think!) drinking bone broth has added benefits and makes it easy to get the collagen that you need to help you look and feel your best.
I must get five texts a day from friends thinking about trying intermittent fasting. One of the best health benefits of bone broth is it’s highly recommended when you’re intermittent fasting, as a bridge to, or bridge off of your fast. It contains numerous minerals and vitamins that help feed your hunger, sell proper nutrients, and prep your body to work back into digesting solid food again. Additionally, bone broth can help keep you feeling full for longer and reduces hunger pangs, so it’s a great low-calorie snack between meals.. When you fast with bone broth, your body will burn fat, boost your metabolism, and heal conditions such as the leaky gut and is a great way to clean out your system. You can make bone broth with any clean, grass-fed animal bones, but overall, chicken bones are easy to acquire, the broth has many health benefits, and tastes great, so it’s a great recipe to try if you are just starting out! Below you’ll find my homemade chicken bone broth recipes. Leave a comment below if you try it out!

Our bodies rarely acquire all the vitamins and minerals that we need to stay healthy and strong due to diet and lifestyle. This, unfortunately, can cause sickness or dysfunction over time. Thankfully reputable supplements are a good option to make sure you’re getting all the right amounts of nutrients that you need.
